"The movie and TV series "Flipper" were filmed at the Seaquarium in the 1960s. It continued to be a go-to spot for Hollywood producers looking for an easy way to film marine life, including "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" in 1994.
The facility was Miami's first "really big attraction" — other than the beach — and predated theme parks like Disney World by more than 15 years. It served as a template for other marine mammal parks, said Ken Breslauer, author of "Florida Roadside Attractions History."
